Dreaming About Retreats

2025 has been the year of retreats and reunions for our family: Writing, reading, and nature retreats plus family, college, and high school reunions. Taking time to pause and reconnect with friends, family, and the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest has us reflecting on what our own little retreat in the Driftless Region offers our guests.
Here are the Top 5 retreat features of the B&B on Broadway that guests comment on again and again:
The breakfast . . . “Food was amazing!” “Best breakfast ever!”
The beds . . .“The bedding was so soft and comfortable. Highly recommend!”
The rooms . . . “Every room had a unique feature that we enjoyed: the jetted tub, the balcony, the sauna, and reading nooks!”
The house . . . “Love this property and the lovely owners. The home is beautiful with the perfect set up for a B&B. The main floor has an open space with a piano and sitting room to use. Upstairs are completely separate rooms each with a locking door and own bathroom.”
The location . . . “Easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, sites, hiking & biking trails, and the river!” “Decorah is an amazing small town that feels big with all it has to offer.”
“One of the most lavish and comfortable stays we’ve ever had at a B&B! The perfect hosts and amazing granola for breakfast.” – Katie & Jeremy, 5/25
“We’ve stayed in a lot of B&Bs and your is on top!” – David & Sue, 9/25
We agree with all of the above—the B&B on Broadway is an amazing house in an amazing town. But the retreat that we enjoy every day is the Driftless Region. With its limestone bluffs, rivers, forested trails, and patchwork of prairies, you can find the space you need to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. We feel lucky to be nestled in its beauty and refuge.
Just thinking about retreats has me breathing more deeply and more slowly.
Whether it’s for your mind, body or spirit, we all need retreats for mental clarity, emotional balance, and personal growth. Whether focused on wellness, spirituality, creativity, connection, or education, retreats offer a unique opportunity to step away from our daily routines.
Here are a few of our favorite retreats beyond the Driftless:
Doe Bay Resort and Retreat on Orcas Island, Washington, has hot springs, ocean beauty, and great vibes.

Meteora, Greece is renowned for its breathtaking monasteries perched atop towering rock formations.

Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Like Doe Bay, there’s a water theme, plus an exploration of human potential.

Holden Village in Washington’s Cascade Mountains offers a wilderness retreat to reconnect with God, the Earth, and each other.

Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport, Maine, provides a luxurious experience from birch trees to beaches, with treetop spas, swimming pools, and farm-to-fork dining at their Earth Restaurant.

We hope you are dreaming about your next retreat this holiday season.
B&B Buzz
– We were recently part of a tour of historic homes in Decorah. We were the youngest in the bunch with the rest built in the mid-to-late 1800s and us, the new build in 1910. That’s right, we’re 115 years old this year!
– If you’ve visited us in 2025 and planned to write a rave review, please do! Reviews help our small businesses and travelers like you find us. TripAdvisor, Google, or Facebook are all good places to share your experience with us. Remember, return B&B on Broadway guests receive a 10 percent discount! Just mention this newsletter.
May the holiday season and 2026 bring you joy, peace and good health,
Melissa & Matthew
