Whether it’s the whir of the fan or the whoosh of the air conditioner, the B & B on Broadway stays cool during Iowa’s summer saunas. The firebrick exterior also helps keep the B & B’s four zones (attic, second floor, first floor and lower level) cool in the summer and warm in the winter. When you hear those fans whir, you can also rest easy knowing the B&B’s air purification system is doing its job to reduce allergens and other airborne particles, including viruses.

Around the House

When you think of attics, you might not think cool or cozy retreat, but that’s what the B & B on Broadway’s Inspiration Suite provides. With lots of light and reading nooks, the suite features a king bed, two twin beds, kitchenette, living room, two-person jet tub, and sauna shower. It’s a wide, open room with its own bathroom.

Victorian era homes often have large attics with beautiful staircases that make them easy to access. They were primarily used for storage and lacked insulation, making them too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter to be comfortable. But they did have charm: slopped walls, exposed brick and wood beams, intriguing windows, and great views.

Prior to its renovation, the B & B on Broadway’s attic spent almost a century storing furniture and heirlooms of the families who lived here. One of our guests who grew up in Decorah shared that it was also a favorite spot for her and her friends to play. We can imagine children playing some great games of “hide ‘n’ seek” among the boxes, or “castle” in the turret.
