May at the B & B on Broadway

B&B Buzz

With Mother’s Day just around the corner (May 8), B & B on Broadway gift certificates are a thoughtful and easy way to help mom relax.  They are also relaxing for us and you too, now that they can be easily purchased with a credit card and sent electronically the same day! You can also mail them with a special Mother’s Day message. For Mother’s Day or any special occasion, give the gift of a getaway to the B & B on Broadway.

Around the House

We’re dreaming of warm spring days with gentle breezes that beg for open windows. And our windows are ready. We took advantage of COVID times to repair 28 of our original 1910 windows, inside and out. They were beauties when we started, but in need of some TLC. We replaced ropes and weatherstrips, refabricated weather seals, reglazed the glass, repaired any dry rot, and painted. We did some of the work ourselves, but fortunately, there are other old-window lovers in Decorah who specialize in window restoration.

Old wood windows built before 1940 are better than new windows. They allow for better airflow, are more energy-efficient, have less environmental impact, and are less expensive to maintain than replacements made of non-wood materials if you also have storm windows. Plus the lifetime for new windows (vinyl, metal, etc.) is approximately 25 years. Most new windows cannot be repaired. Think of all the windows people throw away. Our windows have lasted over 100 years and could easily go for another 100 or longer if maintained. We have the type of storm windows that we swap out with the original screen windows May through October. Changing out storms for screens is a great way to welcome spring.

Opening a restored window creates a lullaby of soft rumble of wood, rope, and pully, then cool fresh air and muffled sounds from the neighborhood. Perfect for an afternoon nap. Or at night, crickets and stars greet you for a great night’s sleep at the B & B on Broadway.

Around Decorah

May brings new beginnings around Decorah. The Decorah Farmers Market starts its outdoor season of sharing fresh goodness on May 4, in downtown Decorah Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings through October. Commencement and graduation festivities for both Luther College and Decorah High School happen May 22.  And with the end of school, the summer season at the B & B on Broadway begins! Book your stay with us for Nordic Fest or other Decorah adventures this summer.

See you soon!
